Picking Innovators for 20 Years

The goal of the program is to honor the most dynamic, innovative and visionary entrepreneurs throughout New England. Award recipients were selected by a panel made up entirely of past winners. Judges looked not just at the business, but also its history and the original idea behind the business strategy. They also considered the financial and personal challenges entrepreneurs faced in launching the company, and what those nominees did to overcome them. Judges considered creativity of the business model, what makes it stand out from the competition and what is the vision for the future. Finally, judges looked at what the entrepreneurs and their companies give back to the community and to their own employees. A key question: What are nominees doing to shape their corporate cultures to empower and retain the best people?
This year’s Ernst & Young New England Entrepreneur Of The Year award recipients are in good company. The list of past award winners is a veritable who’s who of New England entrepreneurial success. Analog Devices, Ben & Jerry’s, Digitas, EMC, Genzyme, L.L. Bean, New Balance, Reebok, Staples, Stonyfield Farm, Thermo Electron and Yankee Candle are just some of the big-name companies whose founders and executives have been honored with the award over its 20-year history.
Together, this year’s 44 award winners and finalists, employ more than 34,000 people. They generated north of $6.7 billion in revenue last year. They are the innovators who will drive the Massachusetts economy forward.
